Steve Tomasi crushes the epic American Zofingen duathlon race - winning his age group 60-64! The American Zofingen is a test of the athletes stamina and ability. This multi distance duathlon race is set in the Shawangunk Mountains in New Paltz, New York. The running is on carriage roads - first run is 5 miles and second run is 15 miles. The bike is a true test of endurance, even for the most skilled athlete - 84 miles with 9,189 ft of elevation gain.
Prior to this race Steve came back to the InsideOut Lab and completed a Bike to Run assessment. This test targeted his range of race pace intensities and heart rates both biking and running. This data was then translated into usable calorie intakes ranging from 10-30% per hour. Because Steve has been implementing the nutritional principles of metabolic efficiency he was able to utilize his bodies ability to use higher percentages of fat as fuel while racing and preserve those limited carbohydrate stores for higher intensities when the body demanded them. Steve’s total calorie intake was only 1,893 calories for the 9 hours and 40 minutes that he was out there racing.
Final numbers to follow but roughly 38% intake on the running segments and 33% intake on the bike — around 190 calories per hour!
This was a practice race for Steve! He will hone his nutrition further as the race season has just begun. His target race is Age Group ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships in Zofingen, Switzerland in August.
